Cancun vs Tulum: Beaches

When comparing the beaches of Cancun and Tulum, both are delightful, but for different reasons.

If you’re in the mood for a lively beach scene with tons of activities, buzzing nightlife, and plenty of places to grab a bite, Cancun is your go-to spot. It’s perfect for those who love to be in the heart of the action!

Keep in mind that although there are many public beaches in Cancun, others are only for resort guests or those who opt to get day passes.

On the flip side, if you’re looking for a chill vibe with serene beaches, picturesque views, lively beach clubs, and a dash of history, Tulum is the place to be.

So, whether you’re an adventure seeker or a laid-back traveler, both Cancun and Tulum have something special to offer. Listed below are some of the beach beaches in each destination.

In recent years, the beaches of the Yucatan Peninsula, including Cancun and Tulum, have faced a challenge in the form of sargassum, a brown seaweed that accumulates along the shoreline.

This naturally occurring phenomenon has increased due to factors such as climate change and nutrient pollution, affecting not only the beauty of the beaches but also the local tourism industry and marine ecosystems.

Despite the inconvenience, local authorities and hotels have been actively working to manage the sargassum issue. Efforts include daily beach cleanups, employing seaweed barriers to prevent excessive buildup, and even repurposing the seaweed as fertilizer.

Before planning a trip to either destination, I recommend you check out what the sargassum is like that season so that you aren’t disappointed.

If Sargasso is bad, you might consider checking out Isla Mujeres, Holbox, Bacalar, or Cozumel.

Cancun Beaches

While most people in Cancun stick to the beaches of their resorts, there are other beaches in the area worth venturing out to. Here are some of the more popular beaches in Cancun:

Tulum Beaches

Now, let’s head south to the bohemian paradise of Tulum. With a more relaxed vibe, Tulum’s beaches offer a different kind of experience. When in Tulum, you can eat in the many restaurants or chill in the Tulum beach clubs.

If you love history, you’ll love Playa Ruinas, where the ancient Mayan ruins stand tall atop the cliffs, offering a unique blend of history and natural beauty. Here are a couple of popular beaches in Tulum.

Tulum Beach

A wide stretch of white sand and turquoise waters that is close to a lot of boutique hotels, shops, and restaurants. If you’re not staying in any of the hotels, most beach clubs allow you to get a day pass or simply order from their restaurant.

Playa Paraiso

Regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches in the area. It has crystal-clear water, perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Features a popular beach club with amenities.

Las Palmas Beach

Secluded and less crowded compared to other beaches that are ideal for relaxation and sunbathing. Offers stunning views of the coastline.

Playa Ruinas

Playa Pescadores
