Top 7 Most Insane Adrenaline Activities in the USA

written by local expert Becky Rogers

Becky is an avid rock climber and outdoor enthusiast and is now living in France as an expat. When she is not writing about travel gear and various destinations she has visited during her travels, you can find her playing with her two dogs.

The USA boasts such diverse landscapes from desert to greenery, mountains and water, there’s no wonder that this reflects in the range of activities you can do here. On every corner there are so many cool adventures to be had that I took it upon myself to find the most strangest and adrenaline fueled activities that USA has to offer. This is one for the adventure junkies out there!

Researching the weird and wonderful adventures USA has to offer has really made me understand why some Americans just don’t want to leave. You guys have everything! I certainly didn’t come up short searching for things to do here but narrowing down to the most adrenaline-filled activities was tough. Here are my favorites out of the many I came across.

Become an Astronaught and Experience Zero Gravity with Zero-G

Calling all you dreamers who wished you were astronauts! This is your chance to experience complete weightlessness as if you were in space. Honed as the ‘most convincing simulation of a commercial space flight,’ specially trained pilots perform specific aerobatic maneuvers to achieve the exhilarating feeling that is zero gravity.

With each maneuver involving a steep vertical pull up to 32,000 feet, passengers will feel the pull of 1.8 Gs as the plane tips forward and everything becomes weightless. This whole process is repeated multiple times to create a rather strange and extraordinary experience, a thrill that can’t be re-created anywhere else but space.

Flight Locations: Four base airports in Cape Canaveral, Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas and Oakland CA.

Try Your Luck Against Mother Nature, Storm Chasing in Tornado Alley

Just the thought of driving towards a tornado while the cars of nearby residents are driving the other way gives me the chills. Storm chasing tours are a growing popularity among adrenaline junkies and where better to experience it than in tornado alley?

Typically the tours last six days where you set off from Oklahoma City chasing after twisters and giant thunderstorms with your trusty satellite radar imaging. The best time to go get your thrill on is apparently in the spring where the winds are at a high of 500km/h causing more than 400 twisters to rip through Tornado Alley.

Hurdle Down an Olympic Bobsled Course in Utah

This is definitely one on my USA bucket list! Said to be the ultimate roller coaster on ice, up to three passengers can board a comet bobsled with a professional pilot to whip around the Olympic Sliding Track at 70mph generating up to five times the force of gravity.

What’s even more thrilling than that is that you’ll be taking on the track after less than an hour of briefing when Olympic athletes train for years. Break a leg!

Free-fall into the Grand Canyon on a Giant Swing

The world famous Utah rope swing is not for the faint-hearted. Recorded as the largest and most extreme rope swing, you will free fall 400 feet towards the ground before swinging between a slot in the canyon, that’s if you don’t chicken out beforehand! If this crazy ass pendulum swing sounds like your type of thrill then Corona Arch is where you need to go to get it.

Test Your Inner Courage BASE Jumping in Idaho

A pretty awesome fusion between skydiving and cliff jumping, BASE jumping is thought to be a more extreme adrenaline rush as you launch yourself from a lower altitude (meaning less time to deploy your parachute).

Perching 500 feet high on the edge of Perrine Bridge in Idaho, all you have to do is fall and don’t forget to open your parachute! If you want to test your courage and tick BASE jumping off your adventure list, this is one of the top locations to do it in the world. Plus they don’t require a permit so win!

Take a Leap of Faith and Skyjump in Las Vegas

Of course one of the top adrenaline adventures in USA involves a massive building! From the world’s tallest observation tower, 108 stories high, you will be standing at 829 feet with buildings beneath you ready to take a leap into the air.

Free-falling from a tall building, the Stratosphere Jump in Las Vegas is becoming such a popular adrenaline activity that many travelers come here just for this. Like many of the free fall extreme sports though, the anticipation and the exhilarating rush is something that can’t be explained, it has to be experienced. If leaping of a massive building isn’t your cup of tea, there are also plenty of day trips from Las Vegas that you can go on to keep you entertained.

Literally, Fly to Space from the USA

I’m not kidding, for the right price (starting at $250,000) you can travel to space on a Galactic flight later this year. I included a space flight in this list mainly for fun but also because out of all the USA adrenaline adventures I read about, this was rated a 5 out of 5 on the fear factor scale. In a spacecraft that reaches speeds of 2,000mph and altitudes of 50,000 feet though, I would be having a slight panic attack I don’t know about you.

So that’s it. My list of insane and adrenaline-fueled adventures for you to try yourself or just read in awe. These particular activities attract thrill seekers from all over the world so if you fancy getting your thrill on, go check them out!

P.S. If all these sound too extreme for you, check out this post on how to go on a craft beer road trip instead
