Maldives Liveaboard Diving Highlights

Diving in the Maldives is pretty incredible, not only because you can swim with majestic whale sharks and thousands of schools of fish, but because of the crystal clear waters which are warm too.

Never will you have such a comfortable (and mind-blowing) diving experience than here!

So why a Maldives liveaboard? Well, it is the best way — and actually one of the only ways — to visit as many of the reefs and islands that you can in the country without being anchored to a specific resort.

Not only that, but liveaboards also allow you to fully explore the panoramic underwater world as safely and securely as possible while providing you with luxury amenities that will ensure your ultimate comfort at all times.

Let’s just say that liveaboards give you an insight into the charm of the Maldives that you just won’t get anywhere else.

Maldives Diving: What You Need to Know

Best Time to Go Diving in the Maldives

Although it’s possible to dive in the Maldives all year round, the monsoon season (May to August) brings rain, winds and waves that probably won’t give you the best liveaboard experience.

Although diving is still good, visibility is poor, but this is also the time where you can get some great deals so it’s down to your preference.

The best time for scuba diving in the Maldives is said to be between January and April when the weather is dry, the current is calm, and visibility is at its best.

Maldives Diving Safety

Due to its unique geography, the Maldives is subject to a moderate to strong current which may prevail in most of the dive sites. This makes for incredible reefs full of vibrant marine life, but it does mean that these dives are not really ideal for absolute beginner divers.

If you’re not a very confident diver, make sure to tell your divemaster so that they can stay close to you. You can also opt for a Maldives liveaboard that caters to beginner divers so that you can make the most of your experience.

Regardless if you’re a beginner or advanced diver, good practice is to ensure that you always have a neon dive flag or collapsible pole stowed in your BC pocket in case of the current sweeps you astray. Reef hooks and gloves are also advisable due to the strong currents.

For peace of mind during your diving adventures, we recommend having dive insurance in case of any medical emergencies.

This site is located on the southern side of the island where the Indian Ocean meets the shore. There’s a large plateau to hang out on while whale sharks swim past.

How to Get to the Maldives

Getting to the Maldives can be a hassle depending on where you’re coming from.

It’s best to fly from the Middle East or Europe where there are plenty of direct flights. Otherwise, you’re looking at a pretty pricey airfare with lots of stopovers.

International flights fly into Malé or Gan. Typically you’ll fly into Velana International Airport (MLE) on the island of Hulhule’ and be met by members of your liveaboard crew. The crew will then escort you to the port of departure, cutting out any confusion of having to get there yourself.

Best Diving Itineraries in the Maldives

Short Maldives Liveaboard Trips

Most liveaboard trips in the Maldives last a full seven nights, with a few select trips only lasting four nights. On a seven-night trip, you can expect to have five full days of diving, totaling around 20 dives by the end of the trip.

A typical itinerary takes you on a trip starting in the north, circling around different atolls and ending up back in the north again. Often times, you’ll leave from North Malé and visit dive sites in Baa, Raa, Rasdhoo, Ari, and finish in North Malé.

However, some seven-night trips start in the north and instead of circling around, they end in the south.

No matter which route you choose, you’re sure to see the best of the Maldives in the most luxurious way possible.

Extended Maldives Liveaboard Trips

There are some ships that run 10-night trips that allow you to see even more of these incredible waters and pristine beaches.

A 10-night trip lets you explore the best of the Maldives both underwater and on land. You’ll visit dive sites throughout the north and south, and even take land excursions as well.

On longer trips, you’ll likely have the option to disembark for a day to explore Malé city, meet locals, and immerse yourself in a new culture.

If you’re interested in exploring more than what’s in the water, I’d recommend taking a longer trip to get the best of both worlds.
