Nestled in a garden overlooking the quiet sleepy surf town of Batu Karas, Villa Monyet is a hidden gem. As soon as you enter the compound, you will see a lush tropical garden scattered across the beautiful villas and room. The common room area was laden with books, hammocks, and benches, creating a warm and friendly atmosphere. Strategically located, Villa Monyet is just a throw stone to the beach, 1 minute walk to the Reef Reak and 10 minute walk to the main beach. The Green Canyon, another popular spot is only just 5km away.

Villa Monyet Rooms

The rooms in Villa Monyet were spacious and provided the perfect escape from a day of surfing. A large bed with a mosquito net that opens up to a balcony overlooking the lush garden and ocean. Although the room has air-conditioning, you can opt to sleep like we did. With the balcony doors open as we let the sea breeze lull us to sleep. The bathroom is located in a separate hut and was very large and airy. To those that often travel around Asia, you know that hot water is a very rare treat. Luxurious in fact! Just what we needed after a full day out in the sun.

Villa Monyet has six individual bungalows, some of which are family rooms good for multiple people. The room rates include breakfast and use of the kitchen which has hot/cold water, coffee and tea all day. We personally stayed in the Reef Break Bungalow and loved every minute of it!

The Resort

We stumbled upon Villa Monyet after the recommendation of my friend who just came from Batu Karas. Her words were, “stay in Villa Monyet if you want to meet the coolest and friendliest locals to show you around.” Being that Tom and I love local living and think getting to know the locals is the way to finding out more about a place, we did just that. We were lucky enough to chance upon Villa Monyet’s famous seafood BBQ. Not knowing what to expect, we cleaned up straight away after surf and went to the dining area where we saw a large gathering of both locals and tourists. Literally everyone that we saw in the surf line-up was there!

The staff of Villa Monyet laid out banana leaves on the table and proceeded to bbq the most delicious seafood dinner which we all happily ate with our bare hands. A selection of tofu, tempe, grilled seafood, sambal, and vegetables shared between new found friends. With the resort itself exuded a whole relaxed chilled out vibe that was perfect for this small awesome little surf town.

Overall

Despite our stay being short and sweet, we had the most pleasant time in Villa Monyet. Our only comment is that we would have loved for them to have a restaurant during lunch time as chilling in their common area is quite relaxing. They do offer a takeout menu from a nearby restaurant so it was no big deal. It perfectly captured what Batu Karas was all about. With friendly locals who are willing to show you around their local breaks, comfortable rooms with an amazing view, we definitely couldn’t recommend this place more.
