Why You Should Travel with a Water Bottle

Did you know that it takes a plastic water bottle between 450 to 1,000 years to degrade? Even the smallest plastic water bottles stay on our planet and pollute land and water ecosystems for hundreds and hundreds of years after we dispose of them.

While buying plastic water bottles is majorly convenient (if you’ve ever been to Asia, you know how abundant and cheap they are), they do serious harm to our planet. With billions of these single use plastic bottles being sold every year, we’re harming the natural world on an unprecedented level at a more rapid rate than ever.

Enter reusable water bottles!

To cut down on plastic waste and pollution, traveling with your own water bottle is a small but mighty step to combat this problem. Refilling a reusable bottle will save thousands of plastic bottles a year and save you some money to boot.

With all the harm going on in the world, it’s important to do our part to cut down on single use plastic and preserve our planet for now, and for future generations. Not to get all heavy on you, but traveling with your own water bottle is a huge stride in terms of being environmentally-friendly.

Types of Travel Water Bottles

There are quite literally thousands upon thousands of travel water bottles out there.

Here are the main types you may come across while on the hunt for the best travel water bottle for you.

Reusable Plastic

First off, you’ve got your classic water bottles. Typical reusable plastic water bottles fall into this category, with industry leaders like Nalgene and Camelback topping the list.

If you’ve ever owned a water bottle, you’ve probably had one that was made from reusable plastic at some point.

Classic water bottles are great because there are so many of them. You can find them in different sizes and a variety of shapes as well. They’re practical for travel because of this versatility, and their classic nature makes them a timeless piece of travel gear.

Insulated

Next up, you’ve got your insulated water bottles. Insulated bottles tend to be made of stainless steel and keep your drink either hot or cold, depending on what temperature the liquid was when it was poured into the bottle.

Insulated water bottles are an amazing creation, honestly. The fact that you can put ice cubes in your water, seal it up, and have them still be there when you go for a drink a couple hours later is fantastic.

While they’re on the heavier side, traveling with an insulated water bottle is never a bad choice, especially if you’re in a super hot place or like your water cold. In my opinion, they’re the best beach companion you can have.

Collapsible

Speaking of amazing creations, whoever came up with collapsible water bottles is a genius.

A backpacker’s best friend, a collapsible water bottle is both sensible and practical. Made from high quality silicon, these water bottles weigh next to nothing and compress when not in use to take up almost no space in your bag.

Collapsible water bottles are the best because you can travel with them compressed until you come to a water source, and only then does it begin to take up space.

There are tons of different varieties of collapsible water bottles, which I’ll get into later, but let’s just say these are well worth the investment.

Purifying

Finally, there are purifying water bottles that have some sort of internal mechanism to filter water and make it drinkable.

If you’ve ever used a water filter before, you know how frustrating it can be to have to pour your water into the purifier, wait a few minutes for it to filter, and only then have that deep drink your body has been begging for.

Don’t even get me started on the other purifying methods like using iodine – talk about gross-tasting water.

Purifying water bottles is the ideal solution. With the built-in filter, you seldom have to wait for the water to purify, and if you do then it only has to go through the process once, leaving you with clean water for whenever you get thirsty again.

Basically, think a Britta on the go.

Water bottles with a built-in purifier are a godsend for travelers going to remote areas where clean water may not be accessible. These bottles ensure you’ll never go thirsty!

How to Choose the Best Travel Water Bottle for You

Choosing the best travel water bottle based on your own personal needs is essential to ensure that you’ll actually use it on your adventures.

Here are some factors to consider when picking your travel water bottle.

Material

Firstl, you should think about the type of material you want your water bottle to be made of.

Each material has its own special properties that makes it useful to travelers. Materials differ in durability, as well as practicality, so it’s important to find the best one for your specific needs.

Here are some common water bottle materials you’ll come across:

Reusable Plastic – Reusable plastic is one of the main materials water bottles are made of. It’s durable, long-lasting, and quite lightweight which is what makes it a top contender for travel water bottles.

Stainless Steel – As mentioned, insulated water bottles are made from stainless steel. It’s a heavier material but it keeps your drinks at temperature which is awesome if you like cold water on a hot day, or hot water when it’s cold out.

Silicon – Collapsible water bottles tend to be made from silicon, which is a really lightweight and malleable material. When purchasing a water bottle made of this material, you want to make sure you’re getting high quality silicon. Otherwise you’ll end up with leaks or tears which would be a disaster.

Glass – Finally, you’ll find a fair amount of water bottles made of glass. While glass is a very environmentally-friendly material, it’s not too practical for travel as it breaks upon impact. That’s why you won’t find any glass water bottles on this list.

Weight

Weight is an important consideration when picking a travel water bottle as you don’t want something that’s seriously going to weigh you down.

The weight of your water bottle depends on the material it’s made of. Silicon water bottles tend to be the lightest in weight, followed by reusable plastic. Insulated water bottles made from stainless steel are the heaviest as the metal greatly outweighs its plastic and silicon competitors.

Capacity

You also want to think about how much water your bottle can hold. If you’re only looking for a few sips here and there, you don’t need a huge bottle. But if you drink a lot or won’t have access to clean water frequently, you’re going to want something that holds more.

Luckily, water bottles come in so many different sizes, you’re sure to find something that’s best suited to your individual needs and desires.

For reference, your typical disposable plastic water bottle holds 16.9 ounces of water, while the standard Nalgene can fit up to 1 liter, or about 32 ounces.

Obviously, the more water the bottle can hold, the larger the water bottle is going to be.

If you want something that will fit in the side compartments of your backpack, you’ll want a bottle that fits around 20 ounces, or is designed specifically to be tall and skinny. However, if you don’t mind a bottle that takes up space, you can opt for one that holds more.

Opening and Cap

Have you ever been in a bumpy car, tried to take a sip of your water and ended up with a wet lap? The answer is probably yes, and you know that this is every traveler’s worst nightmare.

This is why the opening of your water bottle is an important consideration.

Many water bottles (especially larger ones) have wide mouth openings which are great if you like to fit ice and fruit in your bottle, but can be detrimental when it comes to bumps on the road.

That being said, you’ll find many bottles with a narrower opening that’s easier to drink out of, but you’ll have to sacrifice the ice (or find smaller chips).

Lots of bottles have a straw tip which is arguably the best in terms of preventing spills. While this is super convenient, if you’re a gulper or like to chug your water, this just isn’t practical for you.

Also look out for what kind of cap is covering the opening of the bottle. Is a screw top? Does it convenient pop off with the push of a button? Is it a loose cap or secured with an attachment to the water bottle? Make sure to check this out when choosing your water bottle as it can seriously make all the difference!

Durability

One of the most important factors when it comes to choosing a travel water bottle is making sure that it’s durable enough to last through all of your adventures — whether it’s getting banged around in your bag or falling a few times.

The last thing you want is a water bottle that will break as soon as it hits the ground!

Also make sure that you choose a water bottle that’s secure and won’t leak to preserve your water and keep everything else you’re carrying nice and dry.

different water bottles

Special Features

You should also take into account any special features of a water bottle when choosing one that’s best for you.

Think about what you’ll be doing and where you’ll be using it most.

Looking for something to take to the beach? Choose a nice insulated bottle. Traveling to the more remote corners of the world? Perhaps a water bottle with a built-in purifier will suit you best.

Special features can also include unique shapes that make packing your water bottle a breeze, caps with hooks to hang them from your backpack, or even built-in infusers if you like fruity water!

Think about these features and added benefits they’ll bring, and that should help narrow down your selection further.

Price

Finally, determine your budget.

Water bottles range from super cheap to extremely inexpensive, depending on what you’re looking for. That said, there really is something for every budget in each category.

Just think about how much you’re willing to spend and that should help finalize your selection after everything else that’s been taken into account.

Best Travel Water Bottles 2019

Now that you know all there is to know about travel water bottles, it’s time to check out what’s out there on the market. Here are the absolute best travel water bottles in each category.

Reusable Plastic Travel Water Bottles

Classic travel water bottles will typically be made out of reusable plastic. They’re the best budget options as they’re super durable and dependable. When looking for a classic water bottle, be sure that if it’s made from plastic, it’s BPA free. Also look out for ones that are eco-friendly, and keep in mind that you’l have to keep it clean to prevent gross odors from popping up!

With all of that in mind, here are the best reusable plastic water bottles you’ll find.

Nalgene Tritan Wide Mouth

Capacity: 32 oz | Weight: 6.2 oz | Color Options: 10

My personal favorite, a classic Nalgene is a go-to reusable plastic water bottle. They’re durable, lightweight, and hold a large amount of water, making them perfect for any kind of adventure.

The classic Nalgene has a wide mouth and fits 32 ounces of water, so not only do you get a lot of water, but you can fit some ice cubes in there too! The wide mouth also makes cleaning the water bottle extra easy, so it’ll be ready to take on the go. But if you’re not feeling the hand washing, Nalgenes are dishwasher-safe as well.

I know wide mouths are a drawback for many because if you hit a bump in the road, you’re going to be covered in water, but Nalgene makes a special removable Splashguard that creates a smaller opening. Pretty cool, huh?

One of my favorite things about using a Nalgene is that there’s a loop top so you’ll never lose the lid.

Nalgene Silo

Capacity: 48 oz | Weight: 7 oz | Color Options: 4

Typical Nalgenes are quite big in circumference, but not to fear, Nalgene makes a tall and skinny version of their classic water bottle as well. This is ideal for those who like to drink with one hand and fit their bottles in the side pockets of a backpack.

Called the Silo because of its size and shape, this water bottle holds 48 ounces of water for those few extra sips on extended excursions.

In classic Nalgene fashion, this water bottle also has a wide mouth, loop top, and the durability that Nalgenes are known for.

CamelBak Eddy

Capacity: 20, 25, 32 oz | Weight: 6.1 oz | Color Options: 16

Another leader in the water bottle industry, CamelBak seriously makes unbeatable water bottles.

The Eddy is their classic style which comes with a screw-on cap and attached straw. Basically like a sippy cup for adults, the Eddy makes sure that you’ll never spill your water or go thirsty.

I’m a big fan of the design of this cap because in addition to having a straw, it also has a loop for convenient attachment to packs. If you don’t want to drink from a straw, there are also cap alternatives that you can purchase separately from the water bottle so you can gulp right from the wide mouth.

It’s made of BPA-free plastic ,and comes in sizes of 20, 25 or 32 ounces so you have your pick! With dozens of color options available, this leak-proof water bottle is a great option.

CamelBak Podium Chill

Capacity: 21, 24 oz | Weight: 4.3 oz | Color Options: 7

If you’re looking for a more sporty bottle, this CamelBak not only looks like it came right from the football field, but it’s insulated as well.

This squeeze bottle is perfect for all athletes, but is especially great for bikers. It fits perfectly in a bottle cage, and you don’t have to unscrew the top to have a drink.

Holding 24 ounces, the double-walled construction of this bottle keeps your water cold for twice as long, making it the perfect active travel companion.

Sundried Water Bottle

Capacity: 26 oz | Weight: 5.6 oz | Color Options: 1

If you’re looking for a unique water bottle on a budget, this should be your go-to.

This water bottle from Sundried is made of BPA-free polymer that is not only durable, but doesn’t give off a plastic taste in your water. The mouth of the bottle is smaller and made from silicon, making sipping a breeze. The lid is also leak-proof so you won’t have to worry when you throw it into your backpack.

This bottle is unique because of its shape. It’s a cylinder style but torques in the middle to create a comfortable, one-handed grip when taking a drink. Besides that, it’s also stain, smell and shatter-resistant so you’ll never have to worry if it falls on the ground.

Embrava Sports Water Bottle

Capacity: 32 oz | Weight: 6.6 oz | Color Options: 4

Another very durable and sports-friendly option is the Embrava, which features a flip-top lid and other awesome features. This Embrava water bottle comes with a lanyard for easy carrying or attaching to your pack, and has reflective coating on the bottle to make you stand out on the trail or in the city.

Made of BPA-free Tritan plastic, this water bottle is also eco-friendly so you can feel extra good when drinking from the narrow mouthpiece.

To open the bottle, all you have to do is press a button and the top will flip off, but when it’s sealed, you can rest assured that the bottle will remain leak-proof and dust-proof.

Definitely a steeper price tag than most reusable plastic water bottles, but it’s well worth it.

Contigo Autoseal

Capacity: 24 oz | Weight: 6.1 oz | Color Options: 6

Another flip-top option comes from the bottle powerhouse Contigo, which is known for their durable and well-designed water bottles.

The Contigo Autoseal Cortland water bottle is 24 ounces and gives users access to the drinking spout with a press of the button. When not in use, the mouthpiece is hidden, which prevents dirt from getting in and water from leaking out.

This bottle is lightweight with a carrying loop on the cap, but the best part is there’s a built-in clip on the loop that allows you to attach it to whatever you’d like. Another favorite feature of this bottle is the lock, which prevents the bottle from opening if the button is pressed. Great for ensuring everything stays secure and dry inside of your bag!

Square by Clean Bottle

Capacity: 27 oz | Weight: 5.4 oz | Color Options: 4

Now that we’ve covered all the classics, here come the fun bottles.

This bottle is anything but a classic design because instead of a cylindrical shape, it’s a square! That’s right, a square water bottle — who’s ever heard of such a thing? No one likes chasing their water bottle down a hill or under the seat in front of them. Clean Bottle has come up with a killer solution to this age old problem.

Because of the square shape, if you drop this bottle it won’t roll the way most other water bottles will. Plus, it’s made of super durable Tritan plastic so it won’t break on impact.

There’s a neat carry handle on the lid and the design will fit perfectly in any side compartment of a backpack.

You’ll definitely stand out with this square water bottle, no matter where your travels take you!

Stainless Steel Insulated Water Bottles

If you’re a stickler for cold water or like to travel with hot beverages, your best bet is going for an insulated water bottle.

Insulated water bottles tend to be made of stainless steel and have double, triple or four-walled insulators to keep you beverage at the desired temperature.

The trade-off you make with an insulated water bottle is that they’re much heavier than any of the alternatives, so you need to account for this when packing this type of bottle in your travel bag.

That said, who doesn’t like having a nice sip of cold water on the hottest day? That’s what makes insulated water bottles one of the best choices for travel bottles.

Swell

Swell boasts that their bottles keep beverages cold for 24 hours or hot for 12, and I can attest to this as I’ve had ice cubes still in full form after being in my bottle in hot weather for several hours. One of the best parts about putting cold water in these bottles is that the outside won’t condensate, making them suitable for throwing in your backpack.

This bottle holds 25 ounces of water (and conveniently an entire bottle of wine…just sayin’) and is made from BPA-free stainless steel. The only thing to note is these bottles are not dishwasher-safe and need to be hand washed!

Purifying Travel Water Bottles

Finally, we have our purifying water bottles.

Purifying water bottles are an extremely nifty piece of gear for the most adventurous travelers. Whether you need some clean water on the trail or in the most remote corners of the globe, these bottles will ensure that you stay hydrated and healthy.

These bottles tend to purify in two different ways. On one hand, you have bottles with a UV light that kill all the harmful bacteria found in unclean water. On the other, you have water bottles with a physical filter to get rid of all of the same bad little guys.

Neither type of purifier is better than the other, but when choosing, be sure to read the specific specs of your selected bottle to ensure that it really does the trick.

One of the most popular travel water filters is the LifeStraw, which allows you to drink directly from the water source without fear of harmful aftereffects. To make life even easier, LifeStraw created a water bottle that directly incorporates their filtering straw to allow you to fill a bottle and go.

Choose between a bottle with a 1 or 2-stage filter, depending on your needs. Be amazed when 99.99999% of waterborne bacteria and parasites are eliminated from your drink!

The first stage of the filtration process removes bacteria and parasites, and then the second stage reduces chlorine and improves the taste of your water. It also gets rid of organic chemical matter (think pesticides and herbicides) so you’re drinking clear and fresh water.

The design of this bottle is nice and sleek, allowing users to drink from the built-in straw. With 23 ounces in a leak-proof Titan plastic frame, you’ll never go thirsty again.

Nalgene OG Water Filtration Bottle

Capacity: 32 oz | Weight: 9.6 oz | Color Options: 4

In case you can’t tell, I’m a huge fan of Nalgene, so you can imagine how exciting it is that they make a filtering water bottle that has the same look and durability as their classic wide mouth bottle.

This bottle has a classic Nalgene style with a twist. In fact, it’s even called the OG because it’s as close to the original as you’ll get.

The filter used in this bottle has a multi-stage filtration process that uses an activated coconut carbon fiber mesh surface area to absorb contaminants that may be found in your water. Besides having a water filter, this bottle has a straw! Gone are the days when you spill water all over yourself when going to take a big gulp from the bottle.

With an extra big bottle, this bad boy saves up to 550 plastic water bottles from ending up in landfills. This is a great travel companion for any type of adventure!

Mountop Water Purifier Bottle

Getting into the world of UV purifiers, this water bottle has a light right on the lid that allows you to fill up and purify on the go, without any physical effort. With the press of a button, you’ll get clean water that’s ready to drink in 90 seconds.

When traveling in Asia for the first time, I carried a water bottle similar to this one and it served me really well. I drank the tap water in India and water from streams in Thailand with no problem. The UV light technology really works, and is extremely convenient to have on a water bottle!

With this bottle, there’s no need for batteries as you can recharge it via USB cord. With each charge, you’ll get 12 hours of light that’s able to remove contaminants from you water and keep it tasting good.

Made of Tritan plastic, it’s extremely durable and can go anywhere with you! The only downside is it’s a little top heavy due to the light. But small price to pay when you get clean water with the press of a button.

Travel Water Bottle Accessories

Now that you have your fair choice of water bottles, here are some nifty accessories to deck out your travel water bottle. Not only are these handy items, but they’re super practical for traveling.

Life Straw

As mentioned before, the LifeStraw is an extremely convenient tool to bring along with you if you don’t choose a purifying water bottle.

This straw has a filter in it which allows you to drink directly from impure water sources with no trouble. Or you can stick it into a bottle filled with foreign tap water. For those traveling to places where clean water isn’t abundant, this is the best thing to keep with you to further eliminate the use of plastic bottles.

Reusable Straw

While this straw doesn’t have a built-in filter, it does eliminate the need for plastic straws, which are just as harmful to our environment as plastic bottles.

If you need a straw to drink your water (come on, everything tastes better out of a straw), be sure to carry this along with you to stick in your bottle whenever you need a sip! These ones are the best because they’re super compact when not in use and come with a convenient carrying case to keep them germ-free.

Splash Guard

When talking about Nalgenes, I mentioned using a Splashguard.

Having one of these in my water bottle seriously changed my life! Instead of spilling water all over myself when I went to have a drink, I had a smaller hole to sip from without having to sacrifice the wide mouth bottle.

Coming in tons of different colors and patterns (mine has a smiley face on it to always give me a giggle when opening my bottle), you’re sure to drink sturdily with one of these in the opening.

Carrying Sack

If your bottle doesn’t come with a carrying strap, you can definitely bring one of these little sacks along to throw your water bottle over your shoulder to travel hands-free.

Carabiner

Another way to stay hands-free while always having your water bottle attached to you is by clipping it onto your pack with a carabiner. Some water bottles on this list come with carabiners but many don’t.

This is the best to have with you especially if your bottle doesn’t fit in the side compartments of your backpack so you always have easy access when you need a sip.

blue water bottle

With all of these options, hopefully you’re able to find a bottle that suits your personal preferences and individual travel needs. These bottles are some of the best on the market. Besides saving you money, they’re going to help save the planet as well!

Stay hydrated my friends, and always remember to pack your handy dandy water bottle.
