How to Make Money from Booking Flights: WayAway vs. Skyscanner

written by local expert Natalie Castle

I've been traveling around the world for the last 8 years doing many different jobs from teaching English in Thailand to being an au pair in France. Although I call Florida home, I currently live in Uganda where I work for a nonprofit. In my free time, I love to write travel content to share about all the different places I've been to!

With flight and travel prices on the rise, it can be hard to find a good deal that fits your vacation budget. Popular platforms like Skyscanner have been used in the past to help people find the cheapest flights to their destinations.

WayAway is the new platform that people are turning towards since it has all the features of Skyscanner plus a few extras!

If you’re wondering how you can make money from booking flights (every traveler’s dream), you’re in the right place as I give you ALL the details on how you can make this happen using the WayAway Plus membership. I’ve been playing around with WayAway Plus and can already see how it can save me hundreds of dollars each month.

I find WayAway easier to use and I always find cheaper flights compared to other sites. See how Wayaway compares to Skyscanner and why it’s a better choice in this WayAway review!

WayAway Review

First things first, what is WayAway? WayAway is a flight aggregator. This means you can enter your desired destination and the platform will show you all the flight options including prices, layover times, luggage fees, etc.

It works similarly to Google Flights and Skyscanner. It’s superior to Skyscanner in many ways though because it shows you more airlines and gives you up to 5% cashback on flights.

WayAway saves you time and money when searching for flights and hotels. You don’t need to spend countless hours on every airline’s website.

Not only is WayAway the best way to find affordable flights, but you also get cashback on all your purchases, not just on flights!

WayAway also offers cashback on hotel booking, car rentals, and tours when you use sites like Viator and GetYourGuide. The exact percentage of cashback you receive depends on the booking amount.

I will get into more details on how this works later on.

Travel Insurance

Coming from someone who has been traveling the world for the last 8 years AND has been in the hospital 2x, travel insurance is something everyone NEEDS to get. Get a quote below!

How Does WayAway Work?

WayAway works in two main ways. The first is it makes finding cheap flights easier by acting as a flight aggregator. They aim to help you find the cheapest flights no matter your destination.

Cheap Flights with Cashback

Wayaway’s search functions offer more tools and filters compared to Skyscanner. It compares airways from all major US companies and international carriers.

It lists the best flight prices for your flight dates. If you’re willing to change your itinerary slightly, you can also see better flight deals on alternative dates.

Compared to Skyscanner, WayAway lets you add more filters to flight searches to make it easier to find exactly what you’re looking for.

You can add baggage requirements, layovers, overnight flights, flight details, and luggage rechecks.

You can also search for a flight and then register your email address to receive price alerts. This way you can wait for the prices to drop on a flight you’re looking for in the future. I registered for a WayAway Plus account and this is what it looks like when you want to search for flights.

WayAway Cashbacks

Unlike other platforms, once you become a member, WayAway also gives cashbacks. The amount you earn depends on if you’re booking a flight, hotel, car, or tour. This is one of the main ways that WayAway is a much better option for frequent travelers compared to SkyScanner.

Traveling is expensive especially when you start to add up all the costs of flights, hotels, and tours that you want to do. When you have a cashback feature, it’s easier to put money right into your pocket so you have more cash to spend while on holiday.

The only major drawback of the cashback feature is that you don’t have access to the money right away. There is a waiting period of anywhere from 30 days to 120 days. Most of the time you get the money in less than 80 days though.

To be able to earn cashback, you need to become a WayAway Plus member which I’ll talk more about later!

Extra Features

Compared to Skyscanner, WayAway has many extra features that allow you to filter routes. For example, you can add a multi-city route. This allows you to select all the cities you plan to visit and get the cheapest flights to each of the different destinations.

One of the features I love the most is that it tells you the baggage fees separately. Nowadays, many airlines charge extra for checking luggage. Some even charge extra for a carry-on. Knowing how much you’re going to spend on luggage helps you stay within your budget much easier.

I also love the map feature. If you want to go on vacation but aren’t sure of your destination, you can check out the world map to see the cheapest destinations. This is a great way to travel on a budget and possibly go somewhere you’d never thought you’d go to!

The last feature that is super useful is the city guides. You can see events and attractions around the city you’re in on a colorful map. Just click the place you want to go and you can see directions, hours, and prices if applicable.

When I was looking at flights from Medellin to Bangkok, you can see that by adding the filter baggage included, it provides me with the cheapest option for this flight $1011. Simultaneously, I when I selected without baggage, it showed me a flight option for $964.

Wayaway vs. Skyscanner

Need a real life example of how this works? Let’s compare flights from WayAway and SkyScanner using the same trip dates and the same destination.

I chose to search for a flight from Atlanta, GA to Cape Town, South Africa. With WayAway, the cheapest option is $910 with $13 cash back on United Airlines.

Your cashback with WayAway increases as the total price of your flight goes up.

If you book a more expensive flight, your cashback will increase. For example, this $1,539 flight on United gives you $23 cashback.

With SkyScanner, the cheapest choice is $1,581 using United and South African Airways. Of course, there are no cashback options since Skyscanner doesn’t have cashback or membership options for rewards.

It’s easy to see how you can save hundreds of dollars using WayAway while also earning cashback for flights.

Skyscanner compared to WayAway

You can see how much cashback you’ll get back on flights if you do not have a Plus Membership. However, you’ll need to make an account and pay the annual fee before you can register for the cashback.

One of the main drawbacks though is that you can’t see the cashback amount for Booking.com, tours, or anything else besides the flights. So, you won’t have an idea of how much you could potentially save until you sign up for the membership.

However, with that being said, you can make a rough approximate as you can get around 10% cashback for booking.com reservations.

Saving on travel is one of the most important things! Learning how to budget travel is a skill and WayAway can easily help you find all the best places to save money, even if it’s just a few dollars!

How Much Can I Get Back on Each Booking?

  • GetYourGuide: 8%
  • HostelWorld: up to 6%
  • Klook: up to 7%
  • Viator: 6%

  • GoCity: up to 3%

Sample cashback rates for popular travel programs

One of the best parts about cashback is that it doesn’t expire! Once you receive the cashback, you’ll always have access to it and you can use it whenever you want.

Knowing the percentages of how much you can potentially save is helpful.

Keep in mind though that on places like Booking.com, while 10% is the listed cashback rate, it varies from case to case, taking into account taxes, currency conversions etc.

For example, if I search for hotels in Atlanta, I can see that if I book a hotel for 3 nights, the rough cost of this is $479 plus taxes, giving me a potential cashback of $48.

Pretty sweet isn’t it?

How The WayAway Plus Membership Works

Unlike Skyscanner, WayAway has a membership plan. You don’t need the membership plan to use the flight aggregator but it’s highly recommended if you want to use the cash-back feature!

Definitely get the membership plan if you travel often. The cashback you earn basically pays the annual fee and more. It’s an easy way to earn money to travel.

The plan is currently $99.99 a year, but if you use our discount code (AdventureInYou), it brings it down to $44.99 a year which is less than $4 a month. Click the button below for more details.

Every time you use WayAway, you can sign into your account and earn cashback after you book a flight or stay in a hotel.

Earning cash back puts cash right into your wallet and is much better than earning miles or points. All the cash is put into your PayPal account, so make sure to link your username to your WayAway Portal.

But how much can you actually make as a WayWay Plus member? The exact dollar amount you can make depends on what you book and which platforms you book through.

For example, you get more cashback if you also do car rentals and book tours compared to if you just use it to book flights.

When you book with WayAway, it will tell you exactly how much cashback you will get under the price. This means you’ll know how much cash to expect before you even need to complete the booking.

Here are some examples:

  • You book a flight for $500 with 5% cashback: $25 cashback
  • You book a hotel room for $200 with 3% cashback per night for 3 nights: $18 cashback
  • You schedule a tour for $150 on GetYourGuide with 7% cashback: $10.50 cashback
  • You also schedule another tour on Viator for $100 with 5% cashback: $5 cashback

That’s a total of $58.50 cashback for just one trip! If you bought the Plus Membership Plan at $49.99, you already made all that money back.

Keep in mind the cashback is per person. So, if you booked a group trip under your account, you’ll get $58.50 per person.

Is WayAway Plus Worth the Money?

The answer to this question varies widely depending on how much you travel. If you only find yourself making one trip a year or every few years, the membership plan might not be worth it.

But chances are if you’re reading this review, you’re a frequent traveler looking for ways to save money!

WayAway Plus is 100% worth the money if:

  • You travel often
  • You book tours on Viator or GetYourGuide when you travel
  • You prefer to stay in hotels rather than Airbnbs
  • You’re usually the trip planner for your group and you want to make money based on other people’s bookings

If you meet the above criteria, you could make your annual fee back in just one trip. Then, on every trip after that, you’re just earning cash to use while on vacation.

Having played around with this platform over the last couple of days, I  can safely say that it’s going to be something that I would frequently use. The savings you can make from one trip along more than pays for the membership costs.
