The Canary Islands are made up of eight small islands:
- Lanzarote

One of the best things about this vacation destination is that each island has something unique. There are towering volcanoes that pierce the sky and hidden villages that time forgot. Or, you could check out mystical forests that have been around for millennia or sensational star-gazing opportunities. Each island is special in its own way.
Best Time to Visit the Canary Islands
Because the weather is superb all year round, the best time to visit the Canary Islands depends on how much you want to avoid the crowds and what you want to do.
The busiest seasons are Easter (March-April), summer (June-August), and the holiday season (Christmas to New Year’s). If you avoid these times, not only will you dodge the crowds, but you’ll also take advantage of affordable prices and a laid-back atmosphere.
For high temperatures and sunshine, the best months to visit are May and September. This is when the islands are very quiet. There are some fantastic deals available and the weather is superb.
If you prefer things a little cooler, travel in April (after Easter) or October. The weather is still warm at this time of year and there’s plenty of sunshine, but the temperatures aren’t as high.
Canary Islands Weather
Despite being a rather small place, the weather can be incredibly varied in the Canaries — even within the individual islands themselves. This is because each of the islands has microclimates that can change within minutes.
In general, the Canary Islands experience highs of 100°F (38°C) and lows of 68°F (20°C). Of course, these temperatures can vary depending on the wind and your location. For example, the mountainous areas are always cooler than the beaches.
You’re unlikely to experience rain in the Canary Islands. Most of the rain falls between November and January, but it’s rarely more than a short downfall. Within minutes of a downpour, the sun is back out.
One thing you should be aware of when it comes to Canary Islands weather is calimas. A calima is a weather phenomenon when the wind blows over the Atlantic Ocean from the Sahara Desert, bringing with it scorchingly high temperatures and very low visibility due to sand in the air.
Calimas can happen at any time of year, but they’re much more severe in summer when they can push temperatures above 104°F (40°C).
Which Canary Island is Hottest?
The Canary Island with the hottest year-round climate is Lanzarote. This is because it’s located closer to Africa than the other islands and it has a very flat terrain. For this reason, it also experiences very little rainfall compared to the other Canary Islands.
In summer, temperatures often reach higher than 86°F (30°C), with temperatures hovering around 68°F (20°C) in winter.

How to Get to the Canary Islands
You can easily reach the Canary Islands from mainland Spain and many other countries in Europe. If you’re traveling from the mainland, you can fly into the following airports from Madrid, Barcelona, and many other major Spanish cities:
- Tenerife North
- Tenerife South
- Gran Canaria
- Lanzarote
- Fuerteventura
- La Palma
If you want to travel to El Hierro, La Gomera, or La Graciosa, you’ll need to fly into one of the above airports and catch another flight or a ferry to reach your final destination.
The UK, France, Germany, Czechia, Poland, and many other European countries also offer regular flights to the Canary Islands. If you’re traveling from Europe, you can fly into one of the following airports:
- Tenerife South
- Gran Canaria
- Lanzarote
- Fuerteventura
- La Palma (only from Germany and the Netherlands)
How to Hop Between Islands
Island hopping is a fantastic way to experience more of the Canaries in a single trip. There are two ways to move between the islands — by plane and by ferry.
Plane
There’s at least one airport on every island in the Canary Islands, except La Graciosa. You can find daily flights between the islands, particularly between the larger ones, for very affordable prices. Binter, AirEuropa, and CanaryFly are the three airlines that operate on these routes.
Ferry
If you’re not a fan of flying or you’re planning on renting a car while traveling around the Canary Islands, a ferry is your best alternative. There are daily ferry crossings between almost all of the islands.
Most of the ferry services are run by Fred Olsen and Naviera Armas. The only exception is the crossings between Lanzarote and La Graciosa. These are run by Lineas Romero and Biosfera Express.
Lanzarote

Lanzarote is best known for its volcanic landscapes brimming with rugged lava fields, rock formations, and deep red earth. They provide a striking contrast to the island’s ancient whitewashed houses, sparkling turquoise sea, and blue sky.
