We headed over to Bratislava in Slovakia without knowing what to expect. We secured a hostel which we thought would be a good base for exploring the city. Upon our delight, the hostel that we chose not only provided us with an affordable place to stay but also served as our home away from home while in Bratislava. Here is our review of Freddie Next to Mercury in Bratislava!

The Room

We stayed in one of the private double rooms of Freddie Next to Mercury and were pleasantly surprised at the size of the room. It was like a mini apartment which was funny enough, larger than our last flat! It had a small kitchenette, a couch, a small table, and a double sized bed. For backpackers like us that are used to cramped dorm rooms and hostels, having this much space was definitely a treat. (RELATED: Why Traveling isn’t for Everyone)

The layout of the room was very spacious and we had loads of space to unpack our things. The small kitchenette was complete with everything that you would need from glasses, mugs, utensils, a wine opener, cooking equipment and a kettle. We even had a mini fridge where we could store food in. As soon as we saw the room, we immediately wished we could stay longer!

Although we had a double bed, they were two single sized mattresses put together, which is quite common in hostels in Europe. We loved having that much room as apart from the couch there was even another spare bed which could sleep another person! The only comment we would have is the inaccessibility of plug sockets. Apart from those in the kitchenette, the only two that I could find where in hard to reach locations like behind the bed. Although this is definitely not a big deal. The bathroom was clean and spacious with strong water pressure. Although the shower head couldn’t be fixed on to the wall properly as it was broken, the staff told us it was in the process of being fixed. (READ: What Kind of Traveler are You?)

The Facilities at Freddie Next to Mercury

The hostel itself is located about 10 minutes away from the main train station. It is definitely a manageable walk and is easily accessible using the many tram lines. Since Bratislava is rather small, even the Old Town is a mere 15-20 minute walk away. Although mind you, these 15-20 minute walks are harder to bear when it’s freezing cold outside! The receptionist Viktor was very helpful and constantly gave us recommendations on where to eat, how to get to places, and the must see things while in Bratislava. The hostel had 2 common rooms, an outdoor terrace during the summer time, and a wide variety of rooms from dorms to double rooms with kitchenettes. The wifi throughout the place was fast which naturally is a big plus in our books! Despite being in the 3rd floor, the wifi reached our room with no problems, letting us set up office for a couple of hours a day.

Apart from that, the hostel offered free lockers, free use of their washing machines, as well as a breakfast option for those that wanted to avail of it. The breakfast consisted of a small buffet selection of cereals, juices, bread, ham and cheese. They also provided free coffee and tea throughout the day which was a nice touch. Our Overall Experience at Freddie Next to Mercury

We were pleasantly surprised with both Bratislava and Freddie Next to Mercury Hostel. The city itself is very beautiful and exploring it without any expectations was pretty cool. Rather than giving off a hostel or hotel feel, our room was like an apartment where we could fully relax after a long day of exploring. The staff were always very helpful and gave us loads of tips on where to go during our short visit to Bratislava. If we ever do go back here, we will definitely stay with them again as we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. Our only regret is that we wish we could have stayed longer to fully make use of all the kitchen facilities and common areas!
