written by local expert Anna Faustino

Anna is a co-founder of Adventure in You and has been traveling the world for the last 9 years. She has spent time living in Thailand, Mexico, Indonesia, and Spain and is our local expert in these areas. Her expertise on travel, gear, and building businesses have been featured on Foundr, Business Insider, Yahoo Travel, and more.

Ever since I was a child, I could remember spending hours looking at my uncle’s old National Geographic magazines, gaping at the photos of exotic destinations and epic adventure experiences.

At that time, I thought going on these adventures would remain nothing but a far-fetched dream. Little did I know that the little travel blog that Tom and I built would not only take me around the world but would also allow me to experience some of these adventures that I could only dream about.

As most of you already know, Tom and I have set ourselves the ambitious task of completing the Top 50 Adventure Holidays in the world. Regardless of the fact that we’re not super athletes, we are super excited to huff and puff our way through these epic adventures.

The first one on our list to conquer this 2018? Mt-freaking-Everest!!!

Now, before you shudder in fear as scenes from Into Thin Air and avalanches flash into mind, we’re NOT scaling the mountain itself but will be heading to Basecamp. Regardless, this is something we’re SUPER stoked about. In fact, we’re both buzzing with excitement and anticipation.

A lot of people have expressed interest in joining us for this trip which is why we decided to write a short post about our plans and the itinerary.

Everest Basecamp Training Regimen

Now if you’re like me whose scared sh*tless  worried about what it really takes to climb Basecamp fitness wise, here’s a bit of information that I have from my initial research. The EBC base camp trek is difficult, but not impossible. In fact, considering this is the world’s tallest mountains, you actually just trek up the mountain with no equipment.

In general, they say if you’re comfortable in walking up for 4-5 hours a day with a light day pack, you should be fine. The only main hurdle is altitude sickness but given that these treks have been done before, they have the trek acclimatization schedule down to a tee. As long as you follow your guide, the trek should be perfectly safe.

The secret is to acclimatize well is to walk at a slow pace, ascend slowly and getting plenty of rest along the way. Also, eating and sleeping well while keeping yourself hydrated during the trek is a MUST.

We plan on hitting the treadmill at least 3x a week (walking up at a steep incline) and hiking the local mountain near us 2x a week. You DON’T have to be in i’m-going-to-run-a-marathon-condition but you have to be at least relatively fit in order to enjoy the trek.

There are only actually a few days where you will be hiking for 5 hours straight as most of it consists of morning walks until each tea house where you can then spend the rest of your time resting, reading, enjoying the spectacular views and getting to know the local culture.

So if you’re keen on joining us for these dates, contact us using the details below and we can take on this EPIC adventure together.

  1. I’ve always wanted to do the Everest base camp trek! I hiked Kilimanjaro a few years ago. The altitude will make what would be an easy walk feel hard, so be mentally prepared. I recommend ginger tea if you’re feeling altitude sick, and doing some training hikes at higher altitude if you can.
