Tentree Review: Sustainable Clothing Brand for Traveling

written by local expert Anna Faustino

Anna is a co-founder of Adventure in You and has been traveling the world for the last 9 years. She has spent time living in Thailand, Mexico, Indonesia, and Spain and is our local expert in these areas. Her expertise on travel, gear, and building businesses have been featured on Foundr, Business Insider, Yahoo Travel, and more.

For the last four years, my partner Tom and I have been traveling the world with one backpack each. In the last year, we’ve even downsized to both carry-on bags which means our space is even smaller. With that in mind, every piece of clothing and travel gear that we carry needs to be top quality.

I admit to being one of those travelers who used to buy super cheap items for one reason alone- they were cheap! Little did I know that I actually end up spending more due to the fact that I had to replace these items every six months or so.

This combined with our interest in being more eco-friendly in our travel footprint has urged us to start seeking out sustainable clothing brands which is what led us to the brand tentree.

After looking around their website, we were immediately hooked. What personally grabbed me was tentrees overall mission and brand. Committed to building a more sustainable world, tentree plants ten trees for every item sold

Why tentree

tentree’s mission is to become the most environmentally progressive brand on the planet. Offsetting the negative effects of the apparel industry is at this brand’s core.

For Tom and I, supporting sustainable clothing brands like this is crucial. We live in a time where there are hundreds of brands being launched on a daily basis which is why companies with a strong mission stand out.

This Canadian Brand is reshaping the way the apparel industry works and is challenging everyone, including consumers to start thinking of the brands that they buy into. This for us is a huge deal which is why we jumped at the chance to order a few of their products.

What We Love:

As soon as I saw this shirt, I knew I had to order it for Tom. I read the reviews online and everyone raved about how lightweight it was. Made from eco-friendly products (recycled polyester, organic cotton, etc.) this tee shirt is a perfect addition to our travel clothes.

As mentioned, every piece of clothing in our bag needs to last so I was happy to see that the actual material of this was top-notch. It was soft, looked durable, and very light weight!

I also liked the fact that the manufacturer took the time to mention where the cloth is sourced, what makes it different from the rest, and how it affects the environment.

Juniper Balsa Hoodie

  • Midweight, Regular Fit
  • Machine wash cold, hang dry

What We Love:

Because I loved the print on Tom’s t-shirt…I decided to order the hoodie for myself and since I received it, I have not let it out of my sight! Although we live in Asia, it gets cool in the month of December which makes it hoodie weather!

This, together with most of tentree’s items are made of organic cotton which means that it is grown away from any harmful chemicals which affects the general soil and ecosystem. By using only organic cotton, tons of chemicals and pesticides are eliminated in the process.

This particular one is super soft, lightweight, and is really really comfortable! I am super happy about this pick and I have so far worn it on airplanes, buses, have gone camping with it, and have no complaints about it! If you’re looking for a great lightweight travel hoodie- this one comes highly recommended.

What We Love:

While tentree has loads of other hats to choose from (they are all fab!), this one stood out to me the most because of the cork crown. It’s rugged, can be used to dress up or down and is super fashionable.

Although the cork top looks like a just a fashion statement,  in reality, according to tentree, by stripping the bark from sustainably grown cork trees, you actually promote growth and end up increasing its lifespan. Double yay!

tentree has a whole line of products using cork as part of their initiative as an environmentally friendly brand.

Mittens

Features

  • Unisex sizing S/M,L/XL
  • Jacquard knit, ribbed cuff
  • Wash cold, hang dry

What We Love:

Now I know Thailand doesn’t really qualify as mitten weather, I ordered these just for our upcoming trip to Japan. I was initially hesitant as I’ve never really worn mittens and prefer the convenience of gloves. However, these just looked too darn comfortable which made them hard to resist.

The insides of the glove are made from merino wool and polyester which makes it super soft and warm. I can imagine these babies heating up my freezing hands in no time! Apart from the design on top, it also has a small tentree logo made with cork which I love.

tentree Gives Back

As mentioned previously, for every purchase of any of their items, tentree gives back and plants 10 trees in return. With that in mind, tentree plants trees in over 6 different countries around the world. Attached to all the items that we ordered was a tag where we could register our tree to see where it’s being planted.

These trees are planted in reforestation sites to provide for the needs of local communities in the area. To date, tentree has planted over twenty-five million trees all over the world. I personally loved this concept and is just a great way to get people thinking about their involvement in the retail industry. tentree-token

tentree Gift Ideas

For the holiday season, tentree also has eco-gift packs and when purchased, these gift packs equivalent planting 30 trees! The gift packs come with socks, beanies, notebooks…and of course, trees.

Alternatively, they also have seed greeting cards which correspond to one tree being planted.

Overall, I am through the moon that we found this brand and I can’t wait to try out more of their items. They also deliver all over the world which is great as sometimes, being in Asia, I feel like not as many brands deliver all the way here.

If you’re looking for an eco-friendly brand to support, check out tentree- you won’t regret it!
